Information About Ausangate Trek

Ausangate (Quechua: Awsanqati) is a mountain of the Cordillera Vilcanota range in the Andes of Peru. With an altitude of 6,384 metres it is situated around 100 kilometres southeast of Cusco.

The mountain has significance in Incan mythology. Every year on the north side of Ausangate the feast of Qoyllur Rit'i (Quechua: "snow star") is celebrated before the feast of the Corpus Christi, during which thousands of Quechua pilgrims attend.

This very special alternative trek takes you alongside the spectacular Ausangate snow mountain and takes you over mountain passes, through awesome mountain scenery, authentic Andean communities,  hot springs and turquoise cochas or lakes. This alternative route to the classical circuit around Mount Ausangate still offers the most spectacular views of this sacred Andean mountain before it deviates towards the impressive Sibinacocha Lagoon, leaving tourist crowds behind and entering an almost uninhabited area where you can truly commune with nature. The hike ends in Phinaya, a small and remote Andean community with just horses and bicycles used as unique transportation. The mountain was ascended by Heinrich Harrer in 1953.
